Dr. Francis Fukuyama: From the fall of the Berlin Wall and the USSR to the rise of Trump and Orbán – how did we get here?
The Club, Agion Omologiton 97, Agioi Omologites, 1080 Nicosia, Cyprus
Over the last 30 years, we have enjoyed a growing liberal international order supported largely by the United States with its allies in Western Europe and the NATO alliance, and extraordinary economic growth in the Far East.
However in recent years, the movement towards this increasingly open and liberal world order has begun to falter; authoritarian leaders such as Trump, Duterte and Órban are on the rise and in 2016 the UK chose to “take back control” and reject modern Europe and London in the European referendum.
Why is this happening now? What is someone like Viktor Orbán doing at the end of history? What is Donald Trump doing in the White House? Why were Brexit-voters willing to risk economic costs to ‘get back their country’?
How did we get here?
Join us for a discussion with Dr. Francis Fukuyama, Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and best-selling author of ‘The End of History and the Last Man.’ Drawing from his latest book ‘Identity politics: The demand for dignity and the nation state’s future’, Dr. Fukuyama will lead us through these recent extraordinary developments, exploring how our overpowering human need for social recognition, dignity and belonging has the ability to build and demolish democracy.
